My Difficulties in English

I have difficulties in both written and spoken English.

When I am given topics to write essays, I often run out of ideas. My vocabulary is also quite limited. Although I have read many story books, I just do not know how to apply what I have read in my essay writing.

During oral examinations, I have difficulties in picture discussion and conversation. I feel very tensed as I am required to study the picture and think of what to say in just ten minutes. I also do not know how to enrich my description. I can only describe the picture in a dull manner. I especially do not how to infer from the pictures and can only give short answers.

Conversation with teachers, especially strict-looking teachers, is a great pressure to me. When asked to talk about a topic, I can only muster a sentence or two before going blank. I am not used to talking much in my daily life. Besides, I speak Mandarin at home and therefore have little confidence in speaking English.

Contaminated Curry Puffs

During primary school days, I loved to eat curry puffs. One afternoon, when I was walking home from school, I saw a hawker selling curry puffs, a dollar for three, along the roadside. As I was famished, I bought three curry puffs and ate them all while walking home.

After a few hours, while I was doing my homework, I felt an acute pain in my stomach. I felt nauseous and quickly dashed towards the toilet. After I vomited, I felt giddy and could not even stand up straight. When my mum saw that I was as pale as a ghost, she was very worried and took me to the hospital immediately.

At the hospital, the doctor examined me and said that I had eaten contaminated food and was suffering from food poisoning. I was hospitalised for two days. After I had recovered, I promised myself that I would never eat curry puffs again.

An Attempted Suicide

I was on my way to my friend's house last Sunday. Turning round a bend, I came upon a crowd of excited onlookers. Curiosity got the better of me, I joined in the crowd.

People were mumbling excitedly and looking up a block of flats. There was a middle-aged woman standing on the ledge of the thirteenth floor, wailing. She seemed like she was about to jump down.

A young lady standing next to me fished out her mobile phone and called for the police. A few concerned onlookers shouted out at the top of their voices, telling the woman not to do anything foolish.

After five minutes, a group of policemen arrived at the scene. They cordoned off the area and inflated a huge canvas mattress beneath the spot where the woman was standing. At the same time, two female police officers went up to the thirteenth floor and tactfully approached the woman who was attempting suicide. They patiently persuaded her to get down from the ledge but she seemed adamant and refused to listen to them. She kept shouting for them to get lost and let her be.

The persistent officers did not give up and after about half an hour, to everybody's relief, the woman started to climb down the ledge and was led to the ground level by the two female officers. She was then taken away in a police car.

As the crowd started to disperse, I learnt that the woman had wanted to commit suicide because she was diagnosed with cancer. I feel that life is precious, she should fight against the cancer instead of trying to end her life.

I Dropped My Money

I was walking on the sidewalk from my house to the supermarket. Mum asked me to buy a packet of salt for her. I twirled a one dollar coin in my hand.

Suddenly, the coin slipped off my fingers and dropped right into the drain. Oh dear! I searched around for something long that I could use to retrieve my money. The only thing I could find was a tree branch.

I tried very hard get back my coin. I laid on my stomach to fish the coin out of the drain using the branch but to no avail. I even dirtied my shirt. I finally gave up and walked home glumly. Fortunately, when I account to my mum about the one dollar coin I dropped into the drain, she did not scold me but told me to be more careful in the future.
